ABSTRACT
The topic of this dissertation is evaluation of the role of feasibility study/report as a tool for successful business operation. A study of selected business firms in Nigeria.
The survey and historical research methods were used in the study. A total population of 400 randomly selected respondents out of which a sample size of 200 was selected suing Yarmane’s Kumar’s models. But the effective was 191 respondents who correctly filled and returned the questionnaire.
Questionnaire and interview methods were used in gathering data. Also a review of books, newspapers, magazines and periodicals were carried out.
The simple percentage analysis and statistical were used in treating the data.
The major findings are that:-
i) Responses obtained revealed that the level of awareness of the respondents regarding the use of feasibility study in project analysis and evaluation is very low.
ii) Respondents opinions about the importance of feasibility studies is based on cross ignorance.
iii) Lack of money and ignorance of the importance of feasibility study/report are factors militating against its use.
iv) The respondents opined that the causes of business failure are –
a) Inadequate capitalization
b) Poor planning
c) Poor economic climate
d) Mismanagement of resources
e) Bad luck.
v) All the respondents are ready to use feasibility studies if they know that it is vital in establishing a viable business.
The study concludes that the level of awareness about the uses of feasibility studies in project analysis and appraisal is quite low. This had contributed immensely to its non-utilization among the populace in order to stem the spate of business failures raise optical allocation of resources, increase efficiency and effectiveness, reduce risk of business failure and sustenance of losses.
Based on findings, the researcher recommended massive awareness campaign to the relevant authorities or agencies of the government in order to create the requisite knowledge that will aid prospective investor in making the right decisions. Also individuals and organizations should inculcate the habit of patronizing consultants before starting a business ventures in order to avail themselves to expect advice.
